What is Passion Sunday? Passion Sunday is the day we will honor and celebrate the death of Jesus Christ for the atonement of our sins. Next week, Easter, we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his victory over death.
This Sunday promises to be a very special Sunday as we are making special arrangements to make this service one that truly honors Christ’s sacrifice for us. You don’t want to miss it. Plan to be there!
In preparation for this Sunday I would like to invite you to read Luke 23:1-56. This chapter recounts the circumstances Christ’s death as well as the crucifixion itself.
This past week I heard an interesting question. Do we deserve the cross? In one sense, yes. We do. We sinned and we should suffer the punishment of our sin. On the other hand, the answer is no. No one else but Jesus Christ qualifies as sinless and therefore can sacrifice his blood for the atonement of our sin. Hebrews put it this way, “Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds from dead works so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed.” Hebrews 9:14-15 (NLT)
