In Heaven I I Will Be With God

Message Outline: 9/18/2016

  • What do you think it means to be WITH someone?
  • “All In” series promo (video)
  • What do you think it means to be with someone?
    • With God (Holiness), see Jesus
    • In heaven you will be WITH God.
  • What comes to mind? <different definitions>
  • This can be hard
  • 20 Something blog on Huffington Post (social media, smartphones, and technology
    • Texting means you no longer have to see people face to face (breaking up, I’m sorry, sexting) Leaves unresolved feelings
    • Happiness of being with someone not validated until Instagram, Facebook, <>
    • On social media you always deal with ppl better than you
    • Hide imperfections on an Instagram filter
    • Online dating (people swiped right or left)
    • Romance has been reduced to “hanging out” <Romance is gone, sweet nothings, etc)
      • ILL: Netflix and chill, or watching TV while scrolling Facebook
    • We want the “with” without the “who”
  • Disney TV shows taught us love exists for everyone with little effort
    • Promise without the commitment
    • Anniversaries without the years of relationship building
    • World series of love without going to bat
  • She said we did our part. We showed up. Where is this true love I’ve been promised?  Plus, I saw my friend on Instagram find true love.  How can I post that?
  • Truthfully, you are not wrong for asking, “Where is the love I’ve been promised?”
  • The problem is the answer isn’t in your friends or mates. It goes much deeper than hanging out.

  • Revelation 21:1-4 (Background / Set Up)
  • RV 21:1-2
    • “New” Heaven and a New Earth
      • Not transformation, but something created new
      • “pass away”
    • Intermediate / Current Heaven
      • We believe I the resurrection (1 Thessalonians 4:16, “The dead in Christ will rise in Christ first.”)
      • When we die we are immediately with God, (“We… would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” 2 CR 5:8)
      • No- soul sleep
      • Two choices: God not bound by time or intermediate heaven.
      • Answer: Intermediate heaven (Where we are with God until the day of the resurrection and this verse of scripture)
    • Notice: In this new heaven and earth how Jerusalem descends into the new earth. Essentially, God will be with his people on this new earth.  Not like today.
      • “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”  John 14:23
    • Bride dressed for her husband
      • ILL: Rolling Stone worship album review <> How true!
      • The story of God is he desires a love relationship with you.
        • SO God has subjected himself to ridicule, risk, reward, choice- just like we do.
        • Over and over the Bible talks about God’s love for us like a love song between each other. Listen:
        • “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.  “Is not Israel still my son, my darling child?” says the lord.  “I often have to punish him, but I still love him.  That’s why I long for him and surely will have mercy on him.  “I thought to myself, ‘I would love to treat you as my own children!’ I wanted nothing more than to give you this beautiful land— the finest possession in the world.  I looked forward to your calling me ‘Father,’ and I wanted you never to turn from me.  But you have been unfaithful to me, you people of Israel!  You have been like a faithless wife who leaves her husband.  I, the lord, have spoken.”  Jeremiah 31:3, 20; 3:19-10
        • “Your children will commit themselves to you, O Jerusalem, just as a young man commits himself to his bride. Then God will rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride.” Isaiah 62:5
        • “For the lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior.  He will take delight in you with gladness.  With his love, he will calm all your fears.  He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”  Zephaniah 3:17
      • God longs to be “with” you! All the love songs on earth are a reflection of the image of the One who loves you more!  <>
      • We are created in God’s image. We long for a relationship with him too.  The only person who can satisfy eternity in your heart is God!
    • RV 21:3-4
      • Old order- being separated form God- is gone! Heaven and earth are together.
      • Wiping Tears > We will be healed
        • No more scars, woulda, coulda shouldas, regrets.
        • We will be whole because we are “with” God
      • We commonly think of healing in two ways
        • Stubborn Heart >> Exhortation (tell him what do to, put her in her place)
          • Do it this way or there will be consequences! Benefits if you are compliant!
          • Result >> conformity at its best, rebellion, never maturity.
  • Broken spirit >> repair it.
    • Diagnose the problem >> face it >> painful process of correcting it.
    • Power of change is on insight and understanding, not rules.
    • Often leads to selfishness.
    • Larry Crabb, Selfishness can never be improved to do something good, but it can be replaced with something good.
  • The power of healing in Christianity is being “with” God and “with” each other.
    • We are healed when we are “with” God.
    • You replace selfishness with God. You get past stubbornness by God writing his love on our heart.
    • ILL: Lisa just being with me (She does exhort and give insight but…)
    • The church is about healing us from our sin by being “with” God and with each other.
    • APP: We have this through our relationship with Jesus.
  • The healing power of the Christian faith is it allows you to be with God and accordingly us with each other as brothers in sisters in Christ.
  • In heaven you will be “with”
  • “God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.” RV 21:3 (People- plural)

  • Study your Bible and ask this question, “What’s God’s story?” <>
  • Get in a Go Group and ask, “What’s your story?” <>

TIME OF COMMITMENT: Earlier we noted how often we want the world series of love without going to bat.  Guess what? God knows that about us- and he went to bat for us. <>
