How Surrender is the Key to Knowing God

Note: This is the message outline from 4/17/16.

  • Fresh Start / Review
  • Question: Is surrendering a good character quality? <>
    • Army men surrendering to Donny
    • Movies: Only good time is when you have no other options.
  • Christianity: You have to surrender because you have no other options.
    • Surprising” God had to surrender too.
  • Why? All have sinned
    • Romans 3:23 says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
    • Sin = Missing the mark (Tree stand with a bow)
    • What is the target? God’s glory (fall way short)
      • God has an ideal for your life and you are missing the mark.
      • How much? Not even close / Thoughts (Sermon on the Mount)
    • Sin puts you and I in a no win situation.
      • God dwells in perfection / imperfection messes it up.
      • ILL: New car / Bowling
    • Sin keeps us from God but it keeps God from us- and that’s BIG problem for God.
      • John 3:16, “For God so loved the world…”

BIBLE: The solution: Both you and God have to surrender.

  • God surrendered first
    • The only way we could be made perfect is to get rid of our sin
    • The only way to get rid of sin is to shed perfect blood in place of us
    • This is why God became Jesus
      • “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28)
      • Blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins. MT 26:28
    • In order for God to come near us he had to surrender his body, blood, life on the cross.
    • Jesus surrendered…
      • Mentally when he thwarted Satan with scriptures.
      • Verbally when he confessed he and God are 1
      • His will when he said, “Not my will, but your will be done.”
      • Physically when he broke his body and shed his blood on our behalf on the cross.
    • Through Jesus God surrender on the cross so we could be made perfect through forgiveness so we come near to him.
  • In return, we must surrender too.
    • Mentally by placing your faith in Jesus, “Acts 17:31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you be saved.” <>
    • Verbally by confessing his name, Romans 10:9-10, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” <confession = I’ve got a list of wrongs and I need Jesus>

  • You surrender your will through repentance
    • Acts 3:19, “Repent then, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord…”
    • 2 Corinthians 7:10, “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret..”
    • Repentance says I no longer follow what I think is best but what God thinks is best >> Leader of my life.
    • Physically through baptism
      • “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” Acts 2:38
      • Mark 16:16, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.”
      • “What are you waiting for? Get up, and be baptized and wash your sins away calling on his name.”  Acts 22:16
      • Romans 6:3-4, “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
      • Right time, family, get my life right. In the Bible people were baptized ASAP!
      • You don’t clean up your life to get baptized, you get baptized to clean up your life.

  • ILL: Switch the Sheets <>
    • Jesus, “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 1 Peter 2:22
    • “God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

  • 2 Questions:
    • What are your chances of getting into heaven? It’s 0% or 100%
    • Why should God let you into his perfect heaven with your imperfections? Only if you have been made perfect through Jesus blood.
  • Do you need to surrender today?
    • For the Christian- This is a daily process. Take up your cross daily and follow me.  – Jesus
    • For the non-Christian: God has already surrendered so you may know him, will you surrender too?

  • “God I have sinned more times than I can remember. I have screwed up and I have rebelled against you. So I come to you asking for your forgiveness, surrendering my heart and soul to you.  I need your grace.  I want to surrender my life to you.  I’m putting my faith in in you and your Son, and I’m asking you to be the leader of my life.”  (Mentally- but you still need to verbally, willfully, and physically)
