What You Need to Know About 3 Key Relationships for Your Faith

  • New Series: Fresh Start <Grid of life>
    • People often do this with church
    • Mistakes: End up frustrated
    • The spiritual side of making a fresh start
  • Today: God, Jesus, Holy Spirit
  • Faith
    • Not an idea, movement, emotion, or revolution
    • Faith is trusting in someone <children>
    • Faith is trusting in God (love), Jesus (forgiveness), and the Holy Spirit (guide).
  • Problem: Our culture says we need to be true to our self.
    • Therefore, we often project Our self, our truth, onto God. (People end up leaving the faith because they never believed in God).
    • This severely limits our experience, understanding of God. <greater love, trouble, confusing, doesn’t match up with our reality)
    • Start with God. He is the foundation, builds up, and finisher of our faith.
  • Quick survey of these three personalities of God.

    • Described with one word, Love! 1 John 4:8, 15 (God is love, not description, human being)
    • ILL: When in love you have to express it. Sing, dance, heart starts to pound
      • God too!
      • Zephaniah 3:17 it says, ““The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”  (Spins)
      • God is love! Perfect, unconditional, and passionate.  Faith is trusting God will always love you like this.
    • God’s love prompted him to empty himself into a human- Jesus.
  • Jesus
    • God’s love took drastic action <lower then angels, he came to bring God’s love to you and me>
    • “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
    • Word = God became flesh, Jesus <>
    • Jesus came to bring grace
      • Grace = getting the opposite of what you deserve
        • Good news, we’ve all blown it (We haven’t lived the kind of life God desires)
        • God can’t love me… you are right. Why do you deserve anything from God?
      • Jesus came to bring grace! He offers you what you don’t deserve.
        • ILL: over and over (corrupt tax collector, adulterous woman, enemy of Israel, Roman Soldier, people who crucified him)
      • This means God’s love applies to you and me, no matter who you are <>
    • Jesus came to bring truth
      • You get to know God by knowing Jesus.
      • ““No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.” John 1:18
      • “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” John 14:8 – Jesus
      • If you want to get to know God then know me.
      • Sometimes I hear, “I don’t believe in God.” Tell me the God you believe in and I bet I don’t believe I the God too!  <self-projection>
      • Jesus came to dispel any trumped up thoughts!
      • John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son and whoever believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
    • Emmanuel = God with us
      • Easter= Cool! God with us! (40 Days, appeared to people)
        • What if Jesus lived forever? Awesome!
        • But Jesus there is something better…
      • Holy Spirit
        • The night b4 Jesus died, “Your hearts are full of sorrow because I am telling you these things. I tell you the truth. It is better for you that I go away.”  John 16:6
          • Does that make sense <disciples>
        • “Your hearts are full of sorrow because I am telling you these things. I tell you the truth. It is better for you that I go away.  If I do not go, the Helper will not come to you.  If I go, I will send Him to you.”  John 16:7
        • Jesus is saying I am sending the Holy Spirit so Emmanuel will not end.
        • This allows Jesus to be with you no matter where you go.
        • “You have the Spirit of God living in you.” Romans 8:9
        • you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
      • So we have God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
      • Faith is trusting God will always love you with an unconditional, passionate, and perfect love, trusting that Jesus forgave your sins on the cross, and trusting the Holy Spirit will be with you ‘til the end.

Three Questions

  • 3 Questions
  • If you asked God, “If you are love then why do you have so many rules?” How do you think God would answer you?
  • If Jesus challenged you to take the next step (whether it is a truth to be believed or accepting his grace) you need to take towards God, what would that challenge look like?
  • If the Holy Spirit wanted to impress on you God’s love, convict you of a truth, influence you on something, give you peace, to let you God is with you, how would you know he was doing it?

PRAY: Here is the challenge: Let us see you for who you really are, not who we want you to be, or what we project you to be.  Help me not to project me on you, rather, Father, I desire your life projected into me.  Amen.
