Myth Conception- Sex Will Solve (Sunday’s Message Outline)

  • Welcome / What’s your dream? / Daniel 5:14, “The Most High God rules over every kingdom on earth, and he sets anyone he chooses over those kingdoms.”
  • Disclaimer
  • Today’s Myth: Sex will solve it <If you ever said…>
  • Sex doesn’t solve it- it complicates it
  • Why? Sex Procreates! (Children, Joy, unity)
  • Sex also procreates problems
  • Example: King David (Background)
  • 2 Samuel 11, David and Bathsheba
  • 2 Samuel 11:2-4, “One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” 4Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her.”
  • Bathsheba was married to Uriah (Off to war) <so what? Who could het hurt?>
  • Bathsheba says I am pregnant (ensuing complications from the cover up)
  • APP: How many stories have you heard (or even a part of) because sex didn’t solve it, but rather complicated it?
  • Back to that night with Bathsheba
    • Sex for David was not about unconditional love- but self-expression.
    • APP: Sound familiar- listen to a lot of songs on the radio
    • APP: Sexuality in our culture is too often about self-expression- and not about unconditional love. That’s why we think sex solves problems.
  • 3 Views on Sex in America
    • Sex will satisfy my appetite.
      • Greeks and Romans- sex just eating and sleeping
      • It is a skill to be mastered (sex education)
        • As long as no one gets hurt (Come n!)
        • I have needs!
      • Sex will resolve my passion
        • Hellinistic philosophy the highest good is spiritual and physical lesser
        • So sex is dirty and only good for making children
        • ILL: Doing the Dirty Deed
        • It is allowable to build up the family name and reputation
        • This view has taken root in many churches- spiritual to refrain from sex.
        • God gave us sex for more than just having children.
      • Sex resolves my individuality.
        • We are naturally good at heart and sex is about self-expression.
        • It is a path to be yourself and express yourself.
        • Interpersonal love is what makes sex right or wrong.
        • ILL: Big Bang Theory, “Get married? You haven’t even had sex yet?”
      • The problem with these views of sexuality is they never really solve the issues they profess to resolve. Sex as an appetite reduces our soul to animals. Sex as restricting passion represses our soul.  And sex as my individuality removes unconditional love from the equation.

  • The Biblical View: 1 Corinthians 6:17 <Different, Positive view of being single)
    • Background to Corinth (Sex was religion)
    • Verse 16, “Two will become one flesh.” <Unity>
    • Verse 18, “Flee from sexual immorality.”
    • Verse 17, middle, “Whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.”
      • Literally, “Whoever is united with the Lord is one spirit.”
      • United = Cement (You cannot separate cement after mixed)
        • A new whole
      • Your relationship with God trough Jesus is exclusive. You are his and he is yours. <10 Comm. = no other gods>
      • This exclusive relationship you have with God is be reflected in your sexual life. You are to be exclusive to someone else and by doing this you are demonstrating your relationship with God.
      • Singles- Higher plane, “It is good for them (singles) to stay unmarried, as I do.” Why?  More exclusive, not divided with a spouse and family.
    • You are united with Christ exclusively, therefore you are exclusive sexually.
    • ILL: Eggs (Scambled) <>
    • APP: God wants you to be a good egg (When examined you are good)
    • Your sexuality is exclusive because your relationship to God is exclusive.
    • Your sexuality is a witness to the nature of your relationship to God.
    • We are exclusive in our sexual ethics because we are exclusive with God
  • So what do you do with your sexuality?

  • Determine your sexuality will reflect your covenant with God. Does your sexual behavior reflect your relationship with God? <> This is just not having sex outside of marriage.  This includes making a covenant with your eyes.  “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” Job 31:1.  That includes how you dress.  Paul tells his protégé Timothy that our dress should reflect our worship of God.  What does your sexuality say about God?  Does it express the exclusive relationship you have with him?
  • Decide to live by this covenant now, don’t wait ‘til things heat up.
    • As a <_______> you need to decide.
    • You need to sexual covenant with God as much as a spiritual one.
    • I pre-decide something about my future.
    • How many times have mistakes been made by Christians and God mocked because of our poor behavior in this area?
  • Review: The Christian view of sexuality is to demonstrate the exclusive covenant you have with God
  • “Whoever is united with the Lord is one spirit.”

Are you united with the Lord?  By faith, through baptism, for good wo
